Important Information

Thanks for applying to live on campus next year! We know that now you must be curious as to what is going on in the Assignments Office at this time of year, and when you are going to hear about YOUR new fall assignment.

We need to let you know that it's currently Return to Campus Living Time in Niner Nation! This means that residents who live with us now are making their on-campus living choices for the 2007-2008 academic year. It's just one of the perks you'll get next year as an on-campus resident.

Once we have finished processing the Return to Campus Living Requests, your application will be next! Please take this opportunity now to log in to Nyumba to make sure you have completed your application for housing, paid your $100.00 deposit, and returned all of the necessary forms.

Thank you for applying for housing!

We would like to take a moment of your time to say "Thank You" for applying for housing for the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year. You are holding the first of several post cards that will be mailed to you over the coming months to help you get ready for life in the Niner Nation! Before you will be assigned to any space in campus housing, however, you will need to wait patiently for a while as we work with our current residents and their housing choices for the fall.

A very important aspect of living on campus is that once YOU are a campus resident, you will be offered the opportunity to choose housing for the fall following the spring of your academic year residence, ahead of newly applied students. It's called the Return To Campus Living campaign, and the first part of that is "Claiming Squatter's Rights." This means that our current residents may choose to remain in the space to which they are assigned during the spring. Current residents who don't choose to live in the same assignment they already have (or who are not permitted to return to the same space because they are not eligible for that lifestyle) also have the option to try to get another assignment during this same RTCL campaign.

Only after the Return to Campus Living option ends for current students will the Assignments Office begin to look at the task of assigning new incoming students housing space.

So, what does that mean for you? We have your active, complete housing application, which assures that you WILL have campus housing for the Fall. Based on the date that that application was actually marked as "complete," you are "in line" to receive your fall housing assignment.

To help you maximize your chances of getting the assignment you really want, we would like to take this opportunity to call your attention to some of the choices that are available to you as a resident in Niner Nation.

Our housing options exist in definite "communities" which may be defined by physical space OR by programatic concerns. Incoming students may request to live in different buildings or areas or types of housing, or may choose housing based on what a certain community offers to residents. These communities include:

+ The Greenhouse (our Freshman Experience program)
+ Honors In Residence
+ International House
+ Learning Communities (for more information visit the official Learning Community website)
+ Limited Visitation
+ Substance-Free Lifestyle
+ Women's Only Housing

We encourage you to consider first what kind of living experience you'd like to have with respect to the different people you'll be living with, rather than what physical space you want to occupy. For example, if you recognize that one of your main goals in coming to college is to try to interact with lots of different people and build as many friendships as possible, then you'd be best advised to request housing in a highrise. Those communities are large, very interactive, and socially there are the most opportunities to get together with other residents, both formally and informally. This is the housing that everyone considers to be "traditional" college or university housing, because it is living and sharing space with many other people. This type of housing experience is what most folks who have been through the higher education experience look back on and remember as having helped them mature the most during their first year in college.

Some applicants may decide that they'd like to live in suite-style housing. Some communities are located in suites, so you should look at the different community options to see first of all what you can expect if you request and receive an assignment to that housing option. You should keep in mind that suite-style living is less interactive with others in your same building or floor, as well as placing more responsibility for the maintenance of your living area on you and your roommates rather than on Housing and Residence Life housekeeping staff.

If you are a new Transfer Student, or are an incoming Graduate or Non-Traditional student, or want to become an active member of a Greek organization, be sure to check out the options we have for you too! These include:

+ Graduate & Non-Traditional Student Housing
+ Greek Village

Should you decide that one of these communities is of interest to you, we invite you to log back in to the Nyumba Student Gateway and modify your application for housing.

Living on campus means you will have special advantages and services we provide to our residents, such as cable television and in-room movies, laundry facilities, vending, and much more. Check out the many advantages you'll enjoy living in residential housing on campus.

We look forward to welcoming you on campus this Fall. However, if there is anything we can do to help you get ready, please feel free to contact us .

Again, thank you for applying for housing at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte! See you soon!
