Who can live in Intern Housing?
To be eligible for Intern housing, you must have been enrolled as a student at a college or university spring term 2008 and have a summer internship or cooperative job. Your intern supervisor or coordinator will verify your employment.
Where is Intern Housing?
Intern housing will be in apartments in Laurel Hall (formerly Squires Hall). Intern apartments are single sex, and generally have 3-4 residents each. Each apartment is air-conditioned, and includes four 1-person bedrooms, a bath and a half, a large storage closet, a kitchen, and a living/dining area. Each apartment has a three-seat sofa and a dining table with four chairs. Each bedroom has a bed, closet, desk, and desk chair.
When is Intern Housing?
Your Intern Housing Contract guarantees on-campus accommodations from Sunday, May 18, until Saturday, August 9, 2008. You can contract for a portion of the summer: any variation from the entire period must be in writing on the application.
What if I need housing before May 18 or after August 9?
Contact Anne Cavett (accavett@uncc.edu) to request early arrival or late stay housing. A limited amount of space in the University's Guest Housing area may be available both in May and August. Space will be assigned based on availability and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Late stay housing will not be determined or assigned before July 1, 2008.
How do I apply?
The Intern Housing application is online, available from the Nyumba Public Gateway. You first need to create an account and then complete the application and print other information and forms. There are links to the employment confirmation form and the Parking Services permit request form within the Nyumba Public Gateway.
You can be assigned once both the application, the confirmation form, and the deposit are received. The confirmation form should be filled out by your employer and returned to Anne Cavett no later than the end of your first day at work. Finally, if you are bringing a car to campus, you must have a parking permit. If you wish to have that parking permit waiting for you, fill out the attached parking permit application, including payment in the form of a check, and send it in to Anne Cavett.
What does the deposit cover?
The $120 deposit holds a place in intern housing. It will be applied as your last week's rent if you fulfill your obligations under the housing contract. Your obligations are to follow all conditions listed in the Housing Contract, and to arrive and depart intern housing on the dates you indicate. The cancellation deadline is May 4, 2008. Interns who cancel after that date will forfeit their entire deposit.
Are there legal obligations?
All interns sign a contract committing them to payment for lodging and to abide by University regulations. Signing the Intern Housing Application indicates that you have read the contract. Violating those obligations could result in your removal from housing with no refunds given.
How many people live in intern housing?
Space for intern housing is limited. Once space is filled, a waiting list will be generated. Housing assignments will be made by date of application--if you have specific housing or roommate requests, please turn your contract in early.
Assignments will be made late-April: interns are encouraged to have their applications in before April 15.
What is the cost?
The detailed payment schedule is listed in the Intern Housing Contract. The rate for intern housing is $120.00/week. Checks (made payable to UNC Charlotte), cash or credit cards are accepted as payment. There is not a daily rate for intern housing.
What does the rent cover?
Housing rates are inclusive, covering all costs for room rent, utility charges, cable TV connection, RoadRunner (TimeWarner) Internet connectivity, phone installation and local phone service, and the Miner Movie channel.
Phone, Power, & Cable TV
Local phone, power and basic cable services are included in the Intern housing rate. No waiting for the service to start!
Internet Service
Internet service is available in each bedroom via TimeWarner’s Road Runner service. To use the service, you will need an ethernet network card installed in your computer and an RJ-45 ethernet cable. These can be purchased from local retailers at minimal cost. The University strongly suggests all Road Runner users have an up-to-date version of both anti-virus and firewall software installed and activated.
Laundry Facilities
Coin-operated laundry rooms are located on three floors in Laurel Hall. Laundry is $ .75/load and dryers are $.50/load. There are no change machines in the laundry rooms: we recommend you bring rolls of quarters for your convenience!
Parking
All cars brought on campus must have resident parking decals bought through Parking Services. Decals for the entire summer cost $113.00. An application for a summer resident parking decal is available online. If you submit an application with proper payment in advance, your parking decal will be available when you check-in. If you are paying by check, you must write a separate check for the Parking Permit.
Please be aware that you are responsible for any parking violations you receive!
Food Services
A meal plan is not required with Intern housing, but a declining balance is available upon request through the Meal Plans, 49er Card, and Insurance Office ( Auxiliary Services Building, (704) 687-2138). For specific dining services information, see the dining services web page at www.uncc.edu/dining. Summer hours are limited and some services are not available. Chek the website for specific information.
Policy Highlights
Common courtesy and respect are the guideposts for successful living. In particular, three policies may affect summer interns:
Smoking: UNC Charlotte limits the areas on campus hwere smoking is permitted. All residential areas are smoke-free.
Guests: Interns are expected to respect the privacy of their roommates. As such, visitors are welcomed only with the approval of the roommates. Guests are not to remain for longer than three days (consecutive or non-consecutive) within a ten-day period.
Pets: Public health regulations forbid pets in the residence halls. The only exception the University can allow is fish that live in properly maintained and cleaned aquariums.
Fire Safety
The University provides smoke and heat detectors, and a fire extinguisher in each hallway. If the fire alarm sounds, you are expected to evacuate your apartment immediately. The police and fire department will respond. For fire safety reasons, you may not use candles, oil lamps, grills, incense or any other device with an open flame in your apartment. Grills are prohibited in the residence halls. Fire Equipment: tampering with any fire equipment is strictly prohibited. Failure to follow fire safety rules will result in immediate removal from housing with no refunds as well as possible criminal penalties.
Roommate Requests
Every effort is made to honor roommate requests IF all roommates have contract applications turned in, all requests are mutual, and space is available.
Check-In & Check-Out Times
Check-in for all Intern apartments will be after noon on Sunday, May 18. Check-out time is noon. You will receive more specific information with your housing confirmation in late April. For those who check-in after May 18, Housing and Residence Life runs a service desk to accommodate your check-in schedule.
Changes & Cancellations
Please notify Anne Cavett in writing of any changes in your housing requests or arrangements. If you decide at some point that you won’t need housing, BE SURE to cancel your Intern housing contract promptly, so we can serve those on the wait list. See your Intern contract for details about cancellation deadlines and financial obligations. Those canceling after May 4 will forfeit their deposit.
We certainly look forward to seeing you this summer. In the meantime, please contact Anne Cavett (accavett@uncc.edu) or 704-687-7502 if you have any questions or concerns. E-mail contact is preferred!
