FAQ Details: Your 49er Card, Housing, and Personal Safety

49er Card The Department of Housing and Residence Life is very serious about your safety. From electronically monitored access controls to unique lock systems, we make living on-campus as safe and secure as possible. Read on to learn more!

Entry into all of our buildings is strictly limited. Outside residential entrances into our buildings are locked 24 hours a day, year-round. The exterior entrance to the Department's offices, located in Scott Hall is open to the public from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM and is seperate from the residential entrance. During non-business hours, weekends, and holidays, this entrance is also fully secured, just like our other facilities.

Entry to each of our residential facilities is restricted to the residents of that specific building. Residents, as well as Housing and Residence Life employees, must use their University identification card (the 49er Card) to gain access to the lobby areas of our highrise and suite buildings. Residents and employees must carry their 49er card at all times. Guests of residents must carry a photo ID for presentation to security and University personnel, if requested.

Residents are advised that they should not enter a residential facility other than their own, without being escorted by a resident of that building. Similarly, guests of residents must be escorted by the resident that they are visiting at all times while inside the residential facility.

Currently, front entrances to residential units use a specially licensed lock and key system that cannot easily be duplicated as blanks are only sold to licensees and authorized installers. Housing and Residence Life began a multi-year project in 2005 to change to an electronic, card-swipe system. This project is currently on-going. Both systems are high security products providing our residents state of the art security at the door to their living unit.

To help ensure a secure environment, UNC Charlotte has its own police force. These sworn officers protect the campus community 24 hours a day and often work with student groups to increase awareness and promote personal responsibility. University Police patrol the campus all year long and have staff available to provide walking escorts across campus after dark.

Your security is a top priority in Housing and Residence Life. Our uniformed security guards and Residence Hall staff provide assistance to University Police to secure our buildings, enforce rules, and generally promote a safe living environment for you.
