SCHEDULED ROOM CHANGES FOR SPRING 2008 (January 24-25)
Room changes for the Spring 2008 semester are being held on Thursday, January 24 and Friday, January 25 from 7:00 AM – 9 AM. The requested changes will be processed by Residence Coordinators and Graduate Assistants in their offices during the days and times listed below. Please review all of the following information to ensure that you know what to do if you plan on participating.
Room changes require the written approval of a Residence Coordinator or Graduate Assistant in the desired building or area. Requests will be honored on a First Come, First Served Basis. If you cannot be present during the following times, a friend can process your room change for you by taking your valid student picture ID and completing the room change form in the desired new building/area.
Room Change Process
- Consult the vacancy list to see what rooms are available for spring. Vacancy lists will be posted in each area by 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 22. An updated vacancy list will be posted on Thursday, January 24 by 7:00 PM.
- Wait in line to meet with the RC/Grad Assistant of the building/area to which you want to move during the appropriate time (check below for scheduled days and times). Student picture IDs are required for room changes.
- Fill out a room change form.
- Once the form is processed, follow the instructions and steps on the room change form to complete your room change.
- NOTE - All approved moves must be completed within 24 hours. Work with the Residence Coordinator or Graduate Assistant to arrange your move.
Room Change Schedule:
Thursday, January 24, 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM, Shirt-Tailing
Friday, January 25, 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM Any On-Campus Resident
Thursday, January 24, 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Students eligible to process room changes at this day and time are those being “shirt-tailed” in by current residents AND anyone who wants to keep the SAME highrise room as a single. People moving in must be accompanied by at least one current resident (or have current resident’s picture ID).
What Is Shirt-Tailing?
· This option gives current residents the opportunity to get the roommate(s) of their choice. Shirt-tailers may come from on or off campus, but cannot be assigned to a vacancy unless a current resident is present (or represented by a picture ID) when the room change is processed.
· The time set aside for shirt-tailing is 7:00 to 9:00 AM on Thursday, January 24. If neither the shirt-tailer nor the current resident can be present during that time, a friend can process the room change for them if he/she has the room change form and picture IDs of both people.
· A current UNC Charlotte student (now living on or off campus) should go through room changes with a resident of the desired room/suite/apartment (or send a picture ID with the current resident).
· An off-campus student must have a completed 2007-2008 housing contract and $100 deposit on file in the Department of Housing and Residence Life in Scott Hall. If he/she cannot be present for the room change, the names of the current residents must be listed on the housing application, and one current resident must process the room change for the prospective roommate.
Friday, January 25, 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Students wishing to move to other areas and anyone who must move to get a highrise single are eligible for a room change at this day and time. Anyone now living on campus can process a room change to any vacant space during this room change period, first-come, first-served. Shirt-tailing may also take place (if desired vacancy is still available), but is not necessary.
Single Room Availability
Any single rooms available for spring will be on the vacancy list, posted on Tuesday, January 22. Any completely vacant room in Moore, Holshouser, Sanford or Scott may also be claimed as a single. The cost of a designated single room is $2243 (including all utilities, local phone service, cable TV service, Miner Movies, Road Runner, and RSA fee).
Consolidation
To make the best use of housing space, and to be fair to students who have already paid for single rooms, we have a consolidation policy, with which residents will be expected to comply during the spring. If you are in a highrise double and have no roommate or will be losing your roommate, you will be subject to this policy during the spring semester. We may not have enough new applications to assign you a new roommate for the spring. Therefore, you should use this room change period to:
· move in with another student living alone in a double room;
· get another student to move in with you;
· move to any available suite or apartment space;
· move to a single room in Moore, Holshouser, Scott or Sanford (and pay extra for a single room); or
· keep your Moore, Holshouser or Sanford double room as a single by signing a single contract (and pay extra for the single room).
Room Change Opportunity To Avoid Displacement Fall 2008
Some resident rooms are designated for special program use and will result in some existing residents not being eligible to return to the space in Fall 2008. Some residents may want to take advantage of the January room change opportunity to move out of spaces that they will be ineligible to return to for Fall 2008. Completing a room change from a space that will require displacement of residents to a place that does not, will enable the resident to have the option of claiming priority (or squatting) on a room when reapplying for Fall 2008 campus housing. Residents in the following areas will not be able to return to their spaces for Fall 2008 if they are ineligible for the sponsoring program:
- residents of Cedar (reserved for new freshmen)
- residents of Lynch Hall (reserved for learning communities)
- residents of Hawthorn Hall (reserved for learning communities)
- residents of Moore Hall (reserved for new freshmen)
- residents of Sanford Hall (reserved for new freshmen)
- residents of wheelchair-accessible units
- ineligible residents living in the honors apartments/suites in Witherspoon Hall and Laurel Hall (third floor Witherspoon, suites 431 & 435 Laurel)
- ineligible residents living in the international house apartments/suites in Witherspoon Hall (second floor Witherspoon)
- undergraduate/traditional (under age 24) residents living in graduate/nontraditional apartments
- Resident Advisors and students living in rooms to be reserved for RAs next year
Making Your Move
Every student making a room change must be moved out of his or her spring room within 24 hours. Check-in procedure to the new room includes signing out a key and completing a form to record the condition of the room. Because a current resident may be moving out of your new room, you will need to keep checking with the Residence Coordinator to pick up your new key. In cases of "domino" moves, (ie one move being necessary to allow another series of moves) you will need to work closely with the RC/GA to coordinate your move to your new assignment.
