  Handbook - Services and Amenities

When you live on campus at UNC Charlotte, it's more than just a living space. We understand how important that space can be. To that end, we provide many services and amenities that complement our facilities.

Address Changes
If you need to change your address, telephone, or other contact information with the university, please login to Banner Self-Service and make the change.

Air Conditioning
All residences at UNC Charlotte are air-conditioned. For details on how to make adjustments to your room temperature, please see the section “About Your Room” under climate control.

Cable Television Service
Cable service is provided in every room, suite, and apartment. Please call x73778 if you need assistance with your cable service.

Common Areas
There are many common areas (lounges, corridors, recreation areas, etc.) located throughout the residential areas.

These areas can be found in the highrises, Cedar, Hickory, Sycamore, Hawthorn, Oak, Laurel, C.F. Lynch, and Witherspoon Halls. In the Village Apartments, there is a community room located in “P” Building in Martin Village and “G” Building in Hunt Village. There is a community room located on the ground floor of Maple Hall for Phase V apartment residents.

Common areas are primarily for the use of hall/area residents. No individual or group should engage in an activity which prevents the use of these common areas by hall/area residents unless a reservation for the room is approved in advance by the RC/GA.

Furnishings and equipment in the common areas are for the use of all residents. Removal of shared items (such as furniture, pictures, or waste baskets) deprives others of their use. Any common area furniture found in a resident’s room will result in a $25 charge per piece, per person per day beginning from the date the staff confirms that the furniture is in the room. Such action will be considered theft and may result in a charge for replacement, disciplinary referral, and/or legal action.

Storing of personal belongings in common areas will result in a minimum of a $25 charge and removal of the item(s). The University is not responsible for such items that have been removed from common areas.

Convenience Store
Convenience stores (C-stores) are located in the Residence Dining Hall and in Crossroads Cafe. The C-stores offer a selection of snacks, drinks, toiletries, and other supplies.

Elevators
Elevators are provided in all highrises and several other buildings. As the primary source of transportation to the living areas of the highrises and a necessity for many of our residents in other areas, please use care and respect when using the elevators. Misuse of the elevators may result in removal from campus housing and disciplinary referral.

Kitchens
Common area kitchen facilities are available for use in most residential areas. Users are responsible for cleaning the kitchen after use and residents will be charged for any clean up needed. The University is not responsible for items that have been removed from common area kitchens.

Internet Service
High-speed Internet connections for all residents are included in the housing rate. Students will need to provide a computer with a built-in Ethernet card to campus to utilize the Internet connections. Students will also need to bring an RJ-45 Ethernet (Cat-5) network cable with them to attach the computer to the network port. For more information, please visit: www.housing.uncc.edu/technology.

Students living in all halls are provided Internet service via TimeWarner's Road Runner service. For support with Road Runner connections, please call x73778.

All residents are subject to the University's policies and procedures on Responsible Computing and appropriate use of University provided network resources. Residents are responsible for reviewing and understanding these policies, including policy numbers 10, 66, and the supplement to number 66 on peer-to-peer sharing. These policies can be found online at: www.uncc.edu/technology.

Laundry Rooms
Laundry rooms are located in the basement of Holshouser, Scott, Sanford, Moore and Hawthorn Halls, in "P" Building of Martin Village, "G" Building of Hunt Village, on the 2nd floors of Cedar, Sycamore and Hickory Halls, the first floors at Oak, Maple, and Witherspoon Halls, on all floors of C.F. Lynch Hall, and on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of Laurel Hall. Greek Village houses are provided washer and dryer connections but each chapter is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of the machines.

Please note that washers cannot be opened until the full cycle is complete. If your clothes appear to be “locked” in the machine, please check back after the machine has completed the cycle (about 30 minutes).

In the event of a washing machine or dryer malfunction, contact the laundry service company by calling 1-800-622-4729 or by using the online form located on housing's main webpage (www.housing.uncc.edu). Please be prepared to give the machine location and number. Until the machine can be repaired, it is helpful to post a sign indicating that the machine is "out of order." Refunds for malfunctioning machines can be obtained by sending information regarding the refund to housing@uncc.edu. Appropriate refunds are credited to student accounts as necessary.

Miner Movie Channel
Housing and Residence Life offers the Miner Movie Channel (15) offers up to 18 first run movies a month for your viewing pleasure. A program schedule and campus information guide are offered between movie showings and can be found at www.uncc.edu/technology.

Telephone Services
Local telephone service is included in the housing rate. Highrise rooms have one phone jack while suites and apartments have a phone jack in every bedroom and one in the main living area. Each unit shares the same phone line. Private phone lines may be obtained by contacting the ITS-Telecommunications Office at x78800.

To make an on campus phone call, dial the last five digits of the campus phone number.

To make an off campus call, you must dial "9" and then the 10 digit telephone number (area code + 7-digit number). If the call is within UNC Charlotte's expansive 'free' extended local calling area, the call will connect.

The extended local calling area includes the entire 704 area code area as well as portions of the 828, 803, 980, and 336 area codes. For more detailed information on calling areas, go to www.its.uncc.edu/telecomm/Students.

If the number is outside the extended calling area, you will receive a 'fast busy' tone indicating that the call is attempting to reach a long distance number. Long Distance service is not provided with the campus local phone service. Students may utilize any of the "10-10-XXX" services, purchase calling cards, or utilize cellular service to make long distance calls. Calling cards are for sale at a variety of campus locations including the C-Stores, Bookstore, and Cone Center's Candy Counter.

Individual voicemail is available for an additional fee. For more information, please contact the ITS-Telecommunications Office at x78800 or visit www.uncc.edu/telecomm/students

Vending Machines
Vending Services provides snack and drink vending machines in each highrise hall, "P" Building of Martin Village, "G" building of Hunt Village, and in Hawthorn, Hickory, Oak, Maple, Laurel, C.F. Lynch, and Witherspoon Halls.

In the event of a vending machine malfunction, contact the Vending Services Office at x72465. Until the machine can be repaired, it is helpful to post a sign indicating that the machine is "out of order." Vending refunds are available from the Vending Services Office (located in the Auxiliary Services Building) Monday through Friday 8 am until 5 pm.
