Viruses are a specific type of malware that attack your computer, its operating system, installed programs, and/or your files. Typically, these viruses will damage the computer and the files so badly that they cannot be recovered or restored. Some viruses even erase your files!
There are a couple of defenses against viruses and the threat they pose. First, back-up your computer on a regular basis and consider creating routine restore points. Second, use caution in your web surfing, e-mail, and file sharing habits. Finally, consider installing an anti-virus software package on your computer.
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte provides Symantec's Anti-Virus product to all enrolled students free of charge. This software can be downloaded, checked out on disc from the Library, or, for residential students, checked out from your Residence Hall's front desk.
Once you install the software, however, you must keep it up to date! To do this, follow the instructions at the bottom of this page.
